Jennifer Lawrence and Kate Upton are among around 100 celebrities that allegedly had their cloud accounts hacked. The accounts had risque photos that were released on 4Chan.
Some of the celebrities denied the fact that photos were real but a Jennifer Lawrence spokesperson confirmed that those of the Oscar winning actress are real. It was added:
“This is a flagrant violation of Privacy. The authorities have been contacted and will prosecute anyone who posts the stolen photos of Jennifer Lawrence.”
A similar statement was made by Lawrence Shire, Kate Upton’s attorney:
“This is obviously an outrageous violation of our client, Kate Upton’s privacy. We intend to purse anyone disseminating or duplicating these illegally obtained images to the fullest extent possible.”
The mass hacking incident raises serious privacy issues connected to cloud service providers. It is rumored that the accounts hacked were those of the celebrities’ iClouds and some of the pictures that appeared online were actually deleted from mobile phones a long time ago.
Apple representatives confirmed that the iCloud accounts of the celebrities may have been compromised and it is currently investigating.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who also has to deal with compromising pictures being released online, declared that she previously deleted the photos that now appear online.
According to Clifford Neuman, USC Center for Computer System Security:
“Even if you have deleted those photos from your phone, often times they’ve already been uploaded into the cloud. When you deleted them from the phone, they continue to exist.”
Different celebrities also contacted the FBI, whose Los Angeles office did get involved in 2011 after a hacker stole nude photographs and personal information from various celebrities like Christina Aguilera, Scarlett Johansson and Mila Kunis.
Security experts believe that the current leak is caused by a “Find My Phone” app flaw that opens access to data stored in iCloud accounts.
Among the celebrities that seem to have been affected, we can find Selena Gomez, Mary E Winstead, Jessica Brown Findlay, Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, Kaley Cucoo and Kirsten Dunst.
The photos were initially posted on popular anonymous sharing site 4Chan by the hacker. He/she also declared that there is a video of Jennifer Lawrence performing sexual acts. The video is available for purchase, according to the user.
