Maleficent is receiving mixed reviews but managed to have a really strong Friday box office showing of around $25 million. Specialists expect to see a weekend of sales at around $65 million. Anything over $60 million will be seen as a good result by Disney.
According to the same specialists, Maleficent will sell really well in the targeting of girls, families and moms. That is mainly because the weekend is filled with releases that are targeted towards a majority of male viewers (Godzilla, Days of Future Past).
Maleficent marks the first appearance of Angelina Jolie in theaters in the past 4 years. She plays the sorceress in Sleeping Beauty while Elle Fanning is Sleeping Beauty (Princess Aurora).
According to Disney, On Thursday night there were many adults that bought a ticket. 46% of them were male. In other countries the movie appeared in theaters on Wednesday and already grossed in $20.1 million.
While during the weekend it is expected that Maleficent will have the strongest sales, production costs will most likely not be covered. The movie cost $175 million but there is no reason to believe that this amount will not be covered eventually and that profit will be made.
