An official press release released by the ALS Association (ALSA) stated that the organization received $94.3 million in donations through the Ice Bucket Challenge campaign since it was launched on July 29.
In 2013, during the same time period (July 29 – August 27), ALSA gathered $2.7 million. The number was reached with the help of 2.1 million new donors.
Barbara Newhouse, CEO and President of ALSA, stated:
“The ALS Association has been given a great deal of money and with that comes tremendous responsibility. We are absolutely committed to transparency and will be communicating regularly with the ALS community, our donors, the media and the public about progress to invest these dollars wisely in areas that will have maximum impact on the fight against this devastating disease.”
The Ice Bucket Challenge campaign went viral really fast after its launch, as it reached celebrities and politicians. It soon went beyond USA borders and the hash tag used to promote it (#icebucketchallenge) is trending on all large social media channels.
Out of the different celebrities that took the ice bucket challenge we can mention Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Dwayne Johnson, Hugh Jackman, Taylor Swift, George W Bush and Satya Nadella.
