A brand new weight loss procedure is now being tested in KC. It is revolutionary as it eliminates the incision. Such an approach can make it really popular for the severely obese people and for those that just want to shed extra pounds.
The procedure is called POSE and is designed for people with a BMI ranging from 30 to 40. Such patients cannot undergo gastric bypass or other weight loss operations. Saint Luke’s Hospital is responsible for the innovation and Robin Donnelly was the first patient that underwent the procedure.
During the operation the surgeon uses a flexible tube with instruments and a camera that is pushed down the patient’s throat until it reaches the stomach. The doctor then stitches folds.
Dr. Sreeni Jonnalagadda is the first to have performed this procedure. According to him:
“We target those areas in the stomach that are responsible for communication with the brain about fullness and so once you’ve had this procedure done, you feel full after eating small amounts.”
The current study includes patients that get a fake or sham procedure done. All are counseled about exercise and diet. By the end of the year the hope is that patients that undergo the procedure will lose more weight.
Current studies are ongoing and if all goes as planned, the FDA may approve this procedure in 18 months.
