2 Ukrainian military fighter jets were shot down in Eastern Ukraine, according to an official statement made by the Defense Ministry. The two jets were shot down 15 miles from MH17 crash site, over Saur Mogila.
The fighter jets could have carried 2 crew members each. Preliminary information shows that 2 pilots did eject from the jet before it was gunned down. The planes appeared to have crashed in a region that is “controlled by members of illegal armed groups.”
The area near Saur Mogila showed heavy fighting yesterday. The region is important from a strategic point of view and is currently occupied by rebels.
According to Interfax, Ukraine has data that shows that the warplanes were shot down by pro-Russian militants.
While numerous international officials called for a cease-fire between warring groups, fighting is still going on in various different parts of Eastern Ukraine.
As the Boeing 777 plane was most likely shot down by mistake, the fighter jets were not and this is a sign that cease-fires are far from happening in the area.
