The United States military confirmed that it launched 5 extra airstrikes and that the targets were Islamic State sites in Iraq and Syria. This follows the previous airstrikes.
One of the strikes hit Al Qa’im in the northwest region, in Syria, close to the border. Two of the Iraq strikes hit locations near the west of the capital, according to an official US Central Command statement.
Initial reports highlight the destruction of 2 armed vehicles of the Islamic State, together with a weapons cache and 8 extra vehicles. The US military used various fighter aircrafts and bombers. All the aircrafts left the impact area safely.
Till now the US launched close to 200 air strikes in Iraq. The campaign that is carried out this week opens a brand new front in Syria, involving the US in the 3 year old civil war. The support of 5 Arab nations was offered for the first Syria airstrikes.
In Syria we saw a total of 20 airstrikes that targeted Islamic State sites.
Rear Admiral John Kirby, Pentagon spokesman, declared that the overnight attack assessment is still being completed:
“Everything we said yesterday is bearing out today. We do believe that the battle damage assessment that we’ve conducted shows that these strikes were extremely successful in terms of hitting what we were aiming at and causing the damage that we wanted to cause.”
