Shootings were reported at three locations near the Canadian parliament and even inside as one suspect shot a military guard and then appears to have been headed inside. The soldier was just wounded and over 30 shots were reported inside the Parliament.
After the gunfire was reported, Prime Minister Stephen Harper was immediately moved to a safe destination, one that is far away from his office, which is right near the site of the shooting.
According to Ottawa Police, the first shooting took place at 9:52 AM at the Canadian National War Memorial. This marked the start of the episode, which ended up stretching to the Parliament Hill and the Rideau Centre.
Witnesses reported that a long haired man with a rifle was seen shooting the soldier that was guarding the Tomb Of The Unknown Soldier. Then, it was said that the gunman ran towards the Parliament, jumped the wall, hijacked a car and then headed towards Parliament Hill Centre Block.
A reporter of CBC that was inside the Parliament reported that many gunshots were heard. One lawmaker declared that around 30 shots were heard as police fought with the attacker. There is no official confirmation of shots that were fired inside the Parliament building.
As soon as the attack was reported, Canadian military bases were put on a lock down. Similarly, the Ottawa US Embassy was also locked down.
According to Department Of Homeland Security and FBI officials, Barack Obama was briefed and authorities are monitoring the situation in Canada.
The country now has its national terrorism alert level set at high. The suspect is believed to be a radicalized jihadist and it was mentioned that a soldier was killed. According to Public Ministry spokesman Jean-Christophe de Le Rue:
“This level means that intelligence has indicated than an individual or group within Canada or abroad has the intent and capability to commit an act of terrorism.”
Tactical and police teams converged to the affected region. Police forces cleared all the streets around the Canadian parliament, together with people in the region. At the moment, the citizens of downtown Ottawa are recommended to stay away from the roofs and the windows.
The Parliament shooting incident takes place 2 days after 2 Canadian soldiers were hit with a car by an Islamic convert. The suspect in that incident was killed by the police.
The shootings around the government are believed to have been carried out by multiple aggressors.
