The current peace talks happening in Cairo about ending the war in Gaza are not closer to a solution as Palestinians and Israel do not reach a compromise, hours before the 5 day cease-fire expiration date. MENA, Egypt’s state news agency, quoted a Palestinian source as saying that th mediators were making a “big effort” in order to reach an agreement.
According to both sides, there are gaps that appear when reaching the long-term sustainable deal that everyone wants and that guarantees peace. In addition, reconstruction aid is necessary.
Tzipi Livni, Israel’s Justice Minister, talked about renewed hostilities. It signaled that Israel will keep holding fire if Palestinians do the same:
“If they shoot at us, we will respond.”
According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, the current Gaza death toll reached 2,016. Most of the victims were civilians. 3 civilians and 64 soldiers were killed on the Israeli side.
According to the Palestinian side, Israel toughened the stance it showed and highlighted demands that were impossible, especially when referring to security issues.
