The Islamic State militants that currently fight in Syria and Iraq released a new video, one that features John Cantlie, British journalist. The video shows him saying that he will reveal facts about the Islamic State soon in order to counter Western media portrayal.
The Islamic State already released 3 videos showing the beheading of 2 American journalists and a British aid worker, in an attempt to counter US air strikes in Iraq. Thankfully, the new video released does not show a murder.
The video saw the captive, identified as John Cantlie, as saying:
“Now, I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking, ‘He’s only doing this because he’s a prisoner. He’s got a gun at his head and he’s being forced to do this.” Right?
Well, it’s true. I am a prisoner. That I cannot deny. But seeing as I’ve been abandoned by my government and my fate now lies in the hands of the Islamic State, I have nothing to lose.”
The video is released as Barack Obama tries to build a coalition to destroy the Islamic State. The US already carried out different air strikes in Iraq against the militants and the US President declared that there are no hesitations in striking Syria as well.
In the video we see Cantlie speaking about the fact that the UK and the US governments did not want to negotiate the release of captives, while other countries negotiated. He goes on to say:
“I’ll show you the truth behind what happened when many European citizens were imprisoned and later released by the Islamic State, and how the British and American governments thought they could do it differently to every other European country.
They negotiated with the Islamic State and got their people home while the British and Americans were left behind.”
This is the second time John Cantlie was taken hostage. The last time he was captured in July, 2012 but was released, together with Jeroen Oerlemans, Dutch photographer, after the Free Syrian Army rescued them.
