A cease-fire between Hamas and Israel that is meant to last 3 days started. Discussions meant to negotiate an end to the war are going to be held in Cairo, with the main purpose of reaching a truce that can be sustained and rebuild the Gaza Strip.
The truce is officially temporary and was agreed by both sides.
Ground troops from Israel withdrew from the Gaza Strip border area and strikes against Gaza City stopped.
Egypt will act as a mediator between the Palestinian and Israeli delegations in Cairo. Since Hamas took over the region, Gaza was basically cut off from the entire world. The borders were closed towards both Israel and Egypt.
Gaps still remain as the past international attempts to stop fighting failed. Hamas representatives want international fund support to rebuild Gaza, together with a stop in Israeli offensive. Israel does not want to open the borders for Gaza until militants will be disarmed.
Until now the fights showed 67 soldier casualties for Israel and almost 1,900 Palestinians dead, most of them being civilians.
Israel agreed to the truce as it finished its main objective: the destruction of Gaza Strip tunnels used by Hamas militants.
