Nepali police just declared that they detained 2 men and were looking for 2 more under suspicion of raping a US woman in a Kathmandu hotel.
According to Hementa Pal, Senior Superintendent of Police, the institution is now investigating an incident that took place in June 14, in the capital’s Thamel district, which is really popular among tourists for its restaurants and bars.
Robert Domaingue, US Embassy spokesman, said that he did not comment on an individual case because of privacy laws.
The initial statement did not offer any more information expect what was already mentioned. It is not clear if any of those arrested were charged.
In the event that the men are convicted of the charge of gang rape, they can be jailed for a maximum of 10 years.
The region is now hit with local and international backlash against the culture of violence against women, especially after the incidents in India. In 2012 a student was killed and raped on a bus. This led towards tougher laws in India and the latest attack that caught the attention of the media saw 2 cousins found raped and hanged from a tree at the start of May.
