Alleged mastermind, wanted in the Benghazi Libya attacks on the C.I.A. outpost that killed 4 Americans including Ambassador Stevens, on September 11th of last year has been captured by American Special Forces.
According to sources, he was captured in Libya by U.S. Special Forces and is being held in a secure location (possibly a U.S. aircraft carrier) and is in the possession of the F.B.I.
U.S. officials said the joint Special Operations and FBI operation had been planned for months and the raid was approved by President Obama on just this past Friday. According to The Pentagon there were no civilian or other casualties including all U.S. personal who came back safely have left Libya.
Ahmed Abu Khattala will be brought to the U.S. and be tried in American federal court. According to President Obama, the suspect “Will feel the full force of the U.S. Justice System.” Obama praised the commandos, who were said to be special operators from the Army’s elite Delta Force, for “showing incredible courage and precision” in capturing the man who is alleged to have been one of the masterminds of the Benghazi attacks.
Not surprisingly, the noise on the right wing media has tried to put a negative spin on this news that you would think would be a positive step in their “search for the truth about Benghazi”. Conspiracy theories like “this story is a plant from Hillary Clinton” have already popped up on Fox news and the website The Drudge Report, who is normally, abnormally obsessed about Benghazi, but hasn’t featured this important step in bringing the Benghazi terrorists to justice. When I visited The Drudge Report today there was a picture of Dick Cheney on their homepage, and Obama is bad because former V.P. Dick Cheney, who has been wrong on everything, says so. Usually it’s all Benghazi all the time at Druge but not today.
It’s a strange place the right wing media. Good news somehow turned bad. In an added GOP twist, John McCain is on every news station saying that Abu Khattala should be brought to Guantanamo Bay, even though he campaigned in 2010 on closing it. Once again McCain flip flops just to get on the other side of President Obama, even when it includes bringing terrorists to justice.
But according to National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden the administration’s policy is clear on this issue, “we have not added a single person to the Guantanamo population since President Obama took office, and we have had substantial success delivering swift justice to terrorists throughout our federal court system.”
Hayden said that Abu Khattala would be “debriefed for intelligence purposes” and be brought to a U.S. court within a few days.
