Ukrainian military officials declared that a Russian army tank attacked the Eastern Ukraine airfields during Monday as tensions between Moscow and Kiev are worsening.
Battles are currently being fought at the Luhansk airport according to Ukrainian counter terrorism officials.
Before the alleged attack took place, Russia urged the military forces in Ukraine to retreat from the eastern civilian locations. This statement was made as pro-Russian separatists will not willingly disarm as they are afraid of being killed.
Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister, declared:
“Washington and Brussels need to ask Kiev authorities to stop shelling the houses, schools, hospitals and so on because you leave militia with no choice but to stand up to protect their people.
Let’s not ask militia to lay down their weapons and allow themselves to be killed.”
Lavrov went on to add that threats will not resolve this crisis between Russia and Ukraine. He openly criticized president Poroshenko by saying:
“Let us sit down and talk instead of threatening with sanctions and stubbornly making absolutely unrealistic demands of the militia laying down arms.
This is what the peace plan of Poroshenko is about.”
According to Senator Robert Menendez, who is in Kiev, the Eastern Ukraine conflict is not an uprising. He declared it was a Russian invasion and urged the government to send weapons to help Ukrainians protect themselves.
John McCain also had a similar take on the incident.
President Barack Obama did declare that he is against supplying weapons to Ukraine. However, President Poroshenko declared that the situation is now worse and that the conflict with Russia is moving towards a full scale war.
Russia denies having Russian military forces in Ukraine.
