The White House is set to unveil a new component in the plan to aid colleges handle sexual assault problems on campus. The new campaign will have a particular focus on men.
In order to assess possible sexual assaults, the campaign created will create collective responsibility in order to prevent violence and sexual assault. The name of the campaign will be “It’s On Us” and will encourage the students to be responsible, intervene in the situation in which a person appears to be on the hunt, preying on a student.
Joe Biden made allusions to new focuses on preventing the campus sexual assaults back in April. That was a moment when an emphasis was pot on getting rid of outdated attitudes towards sexual assault prevention, one that leads towards blaming the victim. He then said:
“I can’t say often enough it doesn’t matter what coat she was wearing, whether she drank too much, whether it was in the back of a car, in her room, on the street, it does not matter.
It does not matter if she initially said yes and changed her mind and said no. No means no, whatever it is stated.”
According to sexual assault prevention experts, social media and bystander intervention have to be a part of an approach that will encourage the community to take responsibility in order to prevent violence. Also, a focus has to be put on being supportive towards the person that is victimized.
Both points will be added to the new campaign. Bystander intervention strategy will teach people to look for signs that a person may be about to commit sexual assaults and analyze social interactions. Also, it will be focused on learning people to step in and do it properly so that prevention becomes a reality.
It is also expected that the White House will unveil new model policies for universities and colleges so that practices can be revamped by the end of the month.
