In a hard fought battle that went over the 3 hours mark, Maria Sharapova managed to defeat Simona Halep 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 to win the 5 major title of her career and the second French Open title.
This marks Sharapova’s third consecutive, long 3-set match against the Romanian player that was playing in her first major title final. According to tennis players from around the world, the final was seen as one of the best women’s Grand Slam finals in a long time.
Simona Halep manage to get an early 2-0 lead in the first set. Sharapova came back with some luck and managed to win the first set.
The highlight of the match was most likely the second break, which went into tiebreak. Sharapova had a 5-3 lead but halep managed to win 4 straight points in order to force set 3. About this moment Sharapova said:
“Just when I thought I was very close to winning it, I had lost four points in a row. Then the match becomes equal. then you find yourself in a position where you feel like you’re starting over, which is quite difficult.”
