According to Charles Barkley, Tim Duncan may want to retire. Speculations have been around since All-Star Break but the Spurs power forward will never make an official statement about this until the finals are over.
Charles Barkley said:
I think Tim Duncan wants to retire. He’s the greatest power forward of all time. They know they gave away the championship last year and he wants to retire.
Duncan is now 38 and has one more season in his contract with a worth of $10 million. If he wins the fifth ring, he might hang it up, according to Barkley as all basketball players in the NBA “want to leave on a champinship.” The last person to do that was John Elway.
Speculations about the departure of Tim Duncan grew as Spurs gave the player the day off after practice on Tuesday and he did not respond to the press.
The reason why people now talk about his retirement is the fact he said (about the finals):
We’ll do it this time. We’re happy it’s the Heat again.
Both Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili believe that the statement was all about the fact that the entire team is ready and wants to win the championship.
Whether or not the statement hinted at a possible retirement, the NBA finals are sure to be hard thought with two team that both want the title. The Spurs want it more a they had the finals won last year but they did not capitalize in game 6.
