A deadly anthrax infection was identified in eastern Hungary in beef. 5 people are currently monitored with suspected disease symptoms according to ANTSZ health authority.
The disease is said to have been identified in frozen beef after 2 cattle were slaughtered illegally in a Tiszafured farm, which is a city located east of Budapest.
According to the ANTSZ, those hospitalized may have contracted the disease while being involved in the illegal slaughtering. A part of the beef was transported towards a company that currently operates canteens. The firm’s operation is now suspended.
Anthrax can be cured in the event that it is identified in time with the use of antibiotics. However, at the moment the big concern is trying to identify others in the event they were infected as they came into contact with the infected meat or animals.
A criminal investigation will also be launched as the above mentioned canteen firm bought the meat from an illegal source.
There is no immediate threat for Hungarian citizens.
