A car bomb exploded in Abuja, spreading chaos near a busy shopping center. The blast happened as people were watching the Nigerian soccer team take on Argentina in the World Cup competition. According to AP, over 21 people were killed. No word on other casualties.
No responsibility was claimed till now for the attack. The incident took place days after one suicide bomber attacked a center where a World Cup game was being watched in the northern part of Nigeria, in Damaturu. 17 people were killed there.
The current attack in Abuja seems to be the mark of Boko Haram, an Islamist group that has been spreading chaos all throughout Nigeria in past months.
Emergency workers evacuated people and pointed them towards nearby medical facilities.
The car bomb blast destroyed several vehicles, shook buildings and shattered windows.
Boko Haram is well known for vehicle bomb attacks, just like this one. 2 explosions in April killed over 120 people and 200 others were wounded.
The news comes as Boko Haram made news one day before after allegedly kidnapping a number of 91 children from the north of the country.
