Mahafarid Amir Khosravi was executed after being found guilty of a massive $2.6 B fraud that started in 2007 and involved different Iranian banks. Khosravi was a businessman that was sentenced to death after being found guilty of the largest fraud in the country since the Islamic Revolution.
The billionaire was put to death in Evin Prison, which is located north of Tehran. Gholam Ali Riahi, Khosravi’s lawyer, said that he was not given notice about the death sentence being carried out. In Iran the death sentences are carried out through hanging. Riahi declared:
I had not been informed about the execution of my client. All the assets of my client are at the disposal of the prosecutor’s office.
Khosravi’s fraud saw the use of forged documents in order to obtain credit from Bank Saderat in order to buy various assets, including companies that were owned by the state. The billionaire had over 35 companies and fraud began in the year 2007.
39 defendants were convicted after trials began with 4 receiving the death sentence.
