Officials in Nigeria confirmed 5 new Ebola cases in the city of Lagos and the second death caused by the virus. This marks the total number of infections in the city to 7. Onyebuchi Chukwu, Nigeria Health Minister, declared:
“Nigeria as now recorded seven confirmed cases of Ebola Virus Disease (EVB).”
The source of the initial infection was identified in Patrick Sawyer, a Liberian that brought the virus into Lagos on July 20, together with the nurse that treated him. All Nigeria citizens that are infected were primary contacts of Sawyer, who contracted the virus from his sister.
Sawyer traveled to Nigeria for an official meeting of West African officials.He was sick upon arrival and was rushed to the hospital as soon as he arrived. The hospital where he was treated was now closed, ever since his death in quarantine on July 25th.
