Narendra Modi, India’s PM, urges politicians to work hard in order to protect women. This marks the first comments made after the horrible gang-rape and killing of 2 girls one month ago.
Modi basically attacked lawmakers by saying they are “politicising rape” and “playing with the dignity of women”. The horrible incident mentioned was singled out because of the political row that erupted following the horrendous attack.
According to Narendra Modi, the lawmakers have to work towards ending the attacks. Women’s rights groups say such moments are an “epidemic” in the country. In an official statement held in front of the parliament, Modi declared:
“Governments will have to work strictly against this, else our own souls will not forgive us. That’s why I appeal to all state ministers, all ministers please stop politicising rape. Does it suit us to make comments on such incidents, can we not be quiet?”
The statement comes as no surprise as a Chattisgarh state minister said that such “incidents happen accidentally”. Also, a Madhya Pradesh minister said that the rapes are “sometimes right, sometimes wrong.”
Two girls, 14 and 12, were found hanging in an impoverished village after being raped several times. Families claimed that the police did not take action initially as they were “from low caste”.
We will have to wait and see if things change but that will be difficult in a country where such attacks are much more common than the outside world believes.
