The British government made it official and ends speculation as it announced its plans to build a dedicate space travel base that is to be launched in 2018. Danny Alexander, Chief Treasury Secretary, declared:
“I am delighted that the government is pushing forward with its ambitious plans to open a spaceport in the UK by 2018. Spaceports will be key to us opening up the final frontier of commercial space travel.”
The new spaceport is to accommodate Europeans that want to travel to space. In USA we have one spaceport that can handle passenger planes to space located in New Mexico. Virgin Galactic tries to launch tourists trips for a few years and will start offering space travel tickets by the end of the year. One ticket will cost $250,000.
Various spaceport locations are currently discussed in the UK. Out of the 8 that are now suggested, 6 can be found in Scotland.
The new move comes as the entire space sector is thriving. Vince Cable, UK Business Secretary, declared:
“This week we will announce the next steps for this country’s space race, outlining how we will take one giant leap towards establishing the first British spaceport by 2018 – making the UK the place for space.”
