Yesterday, Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 crashed after it appears to have been hit by a surface to air missile. The crash happened over the battle zone between pro-Russian separatists and the armed forces of Ukraine.
Flight MH17 collapsed north of Torez, close to Hrabove and the border between Russia and Ukraine, an area that is controlled by pro-Russian rebels. The initial reports by Reuters said that the plane was shot down by a surface to air missile.
The initial report was that 295 people were on board but it was later revealed that there were also 3 infants on board. The death toll is now at 298. Most of the people on the flight were going to an Aids Conference in Australia, traveling from Amsterdam.
Out of those dead, there were 173 Dutch, 28 Australians, 44 Malaysians, 9 British, 4 Belgians, 4 Germans, 12 Indonesians, 1 Canadian, 1 person from Hong Kong, 3 from the Philippines and 1 from New Zealand. 18 passengers are not yet of a confirmed nationality.
Flight MH17 did not issue a distress call before going down. This means that what happened did happen quick. It is not clear who is responsible at the moment.
The entire world agrees that an investigation is necessary and that the people responsible have to be found.
Valentyn Nalyvaichenko, Ukraine Security Service Chief, declared that he had what was labeled as “unconditional evidence” that Russia is involved in the plane going down and pro-Russian rebels were blamed for the actual attack.
Vladimir Putin declared that it is clear where the incident took place and that Kiev authorities are responsible for the fights starting against with separatists. He also recently added that a cease fire between the separatists and the government needs to happen so that negotiations can start.
At the moment there is not much known about flight MH17. It was reported that pro-Russian separatists found the black box of the plane and US offered its full support for the investigations. Discussions between Vladimir Putin and President Obama did take place.
It was also reported that the flight was 300 miles of its normal course.
So far, most of the proof is directed towards pro-Russian rebels having taken down the Malaysia Airlines aircraft, after rebels acknowledged that they did attack other planes. However, they did not officially take responsibility for this crash and did declare that they are not responsible.
